What We Cover / Overbooked flights

Overbooked flights

Selling more tickets than seats is legal, and airlines do it on purpose because someone usually no-shows. The day nobody does, a full plane is somebody's problem, and the rules make sure that somebody is compensated properly, not just rebooked and waved through.

What it can pay.

RuleWhen it appliesWhat it can pay
US DOTKept off an oversold flight departing a US airport against your will, arriving 1 to 2 hours late domestic or 1 to 4 international: 200% of your one-way fareup to $1,075

Ceilings and entitlements under the named rule, per passenger, before our fee. What applies to your itinerary is confirmed during review, and every estimate stays an estimate until then.

What you will need

  • Booking confirmation showing you held a confirmed seat
  • The gate agent's paperwork, voucher offer, or rebooking printout
  • Your fare receipt, because the US amounts are a percentage of it

Missing something? Submit anyway. We tell you exactly what is worth chasing down.

Good to know

  • The airline must ask for volunteers before it bumps anyone. If nobody asked and you were simply refused at the gate, that is an involuntary bump, and it pays.
  • Taking a voucher for your seat usually signs the cash away. An offer you only accepted after being told you had no choice is a different story; tell us what was said.
  • Overbooking compensation sits on top of the rebooking or refund, never instead of it, and on US departures it is payable the same day, at the airport, in cash or by check if you ask.

Delayed Get Paid is not taking standalone flight-expense or refund-only cases at launch. The airline still has obligations, and the next-steps page explains how to pursue them directly.
