Denied boarding and overbooking

Airlines sell more seats than the plane has, and when everyone shows up, someone gets bumped. If that someone was you and you did not volunteer, the rules are unusually generous, and unusually immediate.

Good to know

  • Volunteering your seat for a voucher usually waives the cash compensation. If they pressured you, tell us exactly what was said.
  • On a flight leaving a US airport the carrier must pay denied-boarding compensation the same day, at the airport, by check or cash if you ask. That applies to any airline flying out of the US, not only US ones.
  • Downgraded instead of bumped? A percentage of the fare comes back too. Mention it.
